Malasadas in Utah County: What They Are and Where to Get Them Fresh

Malasadas used to be something you had to fly to Hawaii for. Not anymore. If you are in Utah County and craving one, you can get them fried to order in Pleasant Grove at Onoh’s Malasada Co.

What is a malasada?

A malasada is a Portuguese yeast doughnut made famous in Hawaii. It has no hole, it is fried until golden and light inside, and it is traditionally rolled in sugar. For the full history, read What Is a Malasada?

What makes a great malasada

  • Fresh from the fryer. A malasada is at its best within minutes of frying. The outside is slightly crisp and the inside is soft and airy.
  • Light, not heavy. A good malasada should feel airy when you bite into it, not dense like a cake doughnut.
  • Simple sugar first. The classic is rolled in granulated sugar. Fillings and drizzles are great, but the plain sugared version is the test.

Why Utah loves malasadas

Utah has deep ties to Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. Many Utahns have lived, studied or served in Hawaii, and Utah has the third-highest share of Pacific Islander residents of any state, according to the University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute. For a lot of people here, a malasada tastes like a memory.
